This week, the CS2 player community found itself puzzled after the developers released the third major update in a short period. The latest CS2 update is particularly impressive in size—around 3 GB. This has raised many questions among fans, especially since the development team had previously seemed quite reserved in rolling out new features.
The latest update affected nine maps: Office, Nuke, Mirage, Inferno, Italy, Vertigo, Ancient, Anubis, and Overpass. At first glance, the changes seem minor: they removed spots where the bomb could get stuck, improved object collision, made movement smoother, and adjusted lighting. However, digging deeper into the update files reveals a significant number of altered materials, none of which are mentioned in the official patch notes.
The main reason for these hidden changes appears to be the Vulkan shader update, which seems to have caused a lot of problems for the developers. Vulkan didn’t perform well on PCs, so to improve performance, they had to recompile materials on the maps. This likely explains why changes that should have been made earlier were delayed—they were held back to complete the work on shaders.
In addition to the map changes, a new protocol related to detecting scripts, macros, and similar functions was discovered in the game files. This update was necessary to prevent false kicks from official servers and to combat cheating players.
The main question remains: why did the developers decide to release three major updates instead of combining them into one? There are two possible reasons. The first is that they might be planning to release something even more significant soon and want to prepare the ground. The second is that developers might receive bonuses for frequent updates, which could also be a motivation for splitting the changes.
In any case, players eagerly await what else the CS2 developers have in store and hope that such frequent updates will indeed lead to noticeable improvements in the game.
